Not just frats.

Any of our special forces (Search and Rescue Techs, Clearance Divers, JTF2) all have prelim weeks. They aren't for testing fitness, or training, they have only one function.

Be as miserable and taxing as possible. Sleep, exertion, emotional distress (they shit on you constantly, JTF plays psychological games with your ass) until enough people quit to meet the numbers they are looking for.

You aren't proud of something you didn't earn, and you aren't useful if you only kind of want something.

The hazing exists to cull the weak, and show you're useful to your new brothers. That is the preselection that women get attracted to. They could care less that salt water has turned your body into ground beef, that you were put into a stress position for 4 hours, or that you were dropped off 50k out in the woods with a pen knife and a map, and have a week to make it back to base.

Lol. You think I don’t know about hazing or fraternities? I’ve pledged once, and will in all likelihood pledge again. We had to clean everyday. We had to sober drive once a weekend at least. If we fucked up we’d pay the price. Have you ever sat blindfolded on a bucket for 10 hours while they blasted annoying music on repeat? Have you ever gone a week without your phone or showering or sleep?

I don’t feel any closer to my pledge brothers because we happened to all get hazed at the same time, I feel close because we overcame bullshit together on a daily basis. But as opposed to say football two a days, I never really felt a sense of accomplishment upon initiation, more like a bit of anger and resentment that we just underwent hell for the amusement of the brothers who were supposed to be our friends.

Twice. We don't do frats on the west coast in Canada. My true college experience was when I joined the navy. I guarantee, whatever hell they put you though is nothing. I got videos of us charging fire hoses on roommates when they are in the shower, guys pissing in hallways to keep you in your room. And this was just the shenanigans.

I had to bring guys into cells. First thing that happened was a strip search and a verbal dressing down. No guy lasted more than a day without breaking into tears. When they got out, they were more disciplined than you'd imagine.

My shipmates used to wake me up in the middle of the 4 hours of sleep I got a night. I got hit with a 220v bug zapper. In PLQ we used to have simulated FOB security and bugged out in the middle of the night for attacks (my buds that went to afganistan did this for real) But I get it. mean 23 year olds were mean to you for no reason. I'm sure it was horrible.

And honestly, this is the stuff I could remember off the top of my head. There is most likely more, if I call up some old friends and shoot the shit.

And it was all for a purpose. without an active war zone to build some male comradare, we make our own. It's never as good as the real thing, but it's intuitive, and it works. Nothing builds stronger friends than suffering. Nothing builds more loyal soldiers than pain.

I'm sure you think it was bad. luckily for you, you don't have the frame of reference to know what bad is. If you don't believe me, feel free to ask vengefully_yours. His experiences trump the fuck out of mine, guaranteed.
