Whats up y'all. I am located in Houston, Texas. My wife requested a divorce on Feb, 9th. I have so many questions.

I have undergone extensive therapy for the last 8 years. Recovering from alcohol for the past 4 years and battling my mental health diagnoses. It's been a long road. I have been in school since Aug of 2019. my wife and I met back in 2011 and dated off and on until we got married in 2017. Our relationship has never been stable, to say the least. I think at this point, she and I are okay with the divorce. we have a sense of inner peace knowing we gave it our absolute hardest effort. We have been to marriage counseling three times.

We have been to marriage counseling three times. battled and fought to stay together. Being in recovery, I understand the power of healing. My wife has been going to therapy since Oct of 2023. Deep down, I knew a divorce was possible with her starting her healing journey. The threat of divorce has been prevalent in the last three semesters especially. For me which is why, I am okay with letting go. I am unsure if I would have ever let our marriage go. I love my kids, which at the very least was why i was willing to stay. With their young age, it has been hard not to see them every day. Since I moved out, I can feel reverting to my old self. I attempted suicide back in Oct of 2018, I shot myself with a .45 ACP. Since moving out, I have been battling. I will never drink alcohol again because it almost guaranteed death for me. I feel my addictive personality coming out in the form of women. I know I shouldn't see any new women but I find myself wanting to be with them, to fill the void of my wife. anyways.

She and I want the best for each other. We both love each other. Frankly, I am unsure if she even wants a divorce. She said she was still willing to support me through school. I think we have a good relationship. I have been asking how i can support her through this time.

Questions:

  1. She and I are both loving people, she wants to support me and I want to support her. I hear all the horror stories that divorce brings, has anyone had a relatively "positive" divorce experience?
  2. Financially, do we even have enough money for a divorce? we have like 8k in cash.
  3. Does anyone have recommendations for a lawyer in the Houston area?
  4. What are some questions that I should be thinking about?
  5. I know VA money is not considered marital property, does that mean I can move all VA money into another account?
  6. What typically happens to houses?
  7. How does the division of debt work?
  8. As i mentioned i love my kids and i will always be a present father, I suppose custody will be 50/50 will I have to pay child support?

Thank y'all for any support.
