Before covid, people used to go out, and spend time at public venues to meet someone. This was a great solution because you had the ability to talk to anyone in the venue, lets say 30-50, maybe 100 people in the venue and would have a wealth of options for people to choose from. When talking to people this is great for networking and getting connections quickly. There are downsides though, you can only talk to people who chose to show up at the same venue at the same time. This rules out many other options that should otherwise be accessible.
Of course it is easy to talk to someone in person and impress them, get their number, and follow up with them later that night or in a few days. If someone goes out, and doesn't meet or secure a number, then the interaction could cost them anywhere between $20 to $100 with nothing to show for it at the end of the night. This means that during the time out someone has to be high performing.
People don't often realize that you don't have to go out to meet people though. This isn't one-off interactions, or a quick conversation and darting. It is possible to utilize social media and various services to meet someone that could be a potential long term partner, work associate, or friend for a variety of situations.
To run through all the options as a means of meeting someone or communicating I will work through the various platforms and look at potential ways to use them to talk to meet someone that could form a concrete relationship.
Instagram You can view someone's account and preferably it will have content that will reflect information about the person such as what they look like, their interests or hobbies, who they hang out with, and what they spend their time doing. On each of the posts it is possible to like or comment. If commenting, you will lead a link back to your own account people can refer to themselves, maybe you have similar content or are from a nearby or similar network of people. You can also instant message the account holder, if they view your account and determine you to be of quality they can respond and a conversation can form from there. The search and hashtag system can be utilized to discover new niches or accounts that may suit a viewers interest.
Twitter You can comment on posts or on content, that can be used to have public or private conversations to communicate with posters. Similar to Instagram.
Snapchat Can share public posts and create a public or private story, or send messages to individuals or within a group message. This can be used to maintain networks of people or stay in contact with those you already know.
Reddit Can post or comment on posts, or communicate with individual accounts privately across a number of subreddit domains.
Other platforms Other platforms could include other social media platforms or websites, or other blogs entirely.
Across the various networks and platforms anyone has access to there are reoccurring trends. One of the main trends is the idea of a public conversation where a user can create a public profile, or a private conversation where a user can interact with another user without the conversation being viewed by others.
Ideally the best way to communicate would be to develop an account based around your interests or hobbies and have a clear purpose for the account. That way, when interacting with other users they can get an idea for the type of individual behind the account. Additionally everything the account created will be useful content that will contribute to the conversations the account is involved with.
Starting from a basic premise, at any time in discussion can you move into private conversation with another user and proceed the conversation from there. You can post something, and hold conversation in the comments of the post, then transition into private conversation with the user, to eventually develop into a more cross platform relationship. Or it is possible to step in as a third party and invite any user involved into a private conversation at any step of the process. This could be with the original poster, or with another commenter on the post.
By keeping these dialogues open it is possible to have high quality conversations that can lead to relationships that can be beneficial beyond a quick discussion with an anonymous user.
Potential pitfalls: This could be creating low quality content, or content that doesn't reflect the purpose of the account. By ensuring the highest quality possible content the user needs to be focused and driven when preparing everything that is release. Another important note is to proof read posts before releasing them for anything that could potentially reduce the impact of the post. This can be things such as basic spelling or grammar mistakes, but could also include more conceptual ideas such as loose ends in the conversation (i.e. starting a train of thought and moving on to other topics without resolving it).
Additionally there are a number of approaches to building an account someone would consider attractive. This could include having multiple hobbies and ideas represented, or having only one idea being considered by the account and having multiple accounts across a number of interests.
The second approach is good because it keeps everything organized, so is easy to avoid having accounts that may not quite make sense. (i.e. having an investing account that also has an interest in bicycles, not really related topics).
Ideally, contributing to conversation between users and inviting people to private conversations can generate more interest. Whether that means starting a private conversation or creating something that will cause you to be invited to a private conversation. There are tons of ways to proceed here.
Pushing to change platforms once in private conversation should be the next step in strengthening a relationship. The more places you can visit with a user the more comfortable they should be with your presence. So for example with reddit, you could completely communicate with someone on an individual subreddit, but also take a more horizontal approach and talk with them across a number of subreddits and niches to grow interest.
