I'm pasting an excerpt from my community's manual that explains an extremely useful wingman play that you can run. The play itself is great but more importantly I think it primes you to consider exactly why a wingman is useful and what sorts of things you can do together. If you want the entire manual lemme know and I'll send it to you. If you have any clever wingman plays then I'd love to hear them!
"Alchemy creating social value out of nothing
The wingman might be the most important node in your network. While you and your self investment are the foundation of your social network the wingman is the cornerstone. I advise delegating the tasks of wingman to a close friend so that they already like you and know a lot about you. This is important because everything that you do or say to send signals will appear undeniably authentic. Humans are so good at detecting fakes so sincerity is key in the entire process but in particular here. So your best friend can be your wingman but don’t expect your best friend to always constantly be your wingman because this can lead to terrible strain on your friendship. For instance when you tell a joke in front of a girl you are trying to impress it is your wingman’s duty to laugh which is a demonstration of your social value. Even if the joke is terrible he should try and give you something. However if you force him to laugh at everything you say especially if its not in front of the girl you are trying to impress it will create intolerable strain on your friendship. So a wingman almost only exists in or around the presence of another interesting node. This is not a limitation on the job of wingman but rather a virtue. A wingman is dynamic and within a social setting you should switch and play your friends wingman if he needs it. I remember a particularly exciting example involving Louis and I. One semester I received an award for outstanding academic performance at the same time that Louis was honored with a very prestigious internship. Of course these would be impressive things to brag about but bragging almost immediately causes your social value to plummet. So instead, when we were in a group, Louis would casually bring up my academic award which signaled to my social peers but saved me from having to brag. I humbly remarked on it but then quickly said “that’s nothing. Louis was selected for a very prestigious internship. What was that internship again lou?” It was a small back and forth exchange that allowed us to display signals of our social value that we would have otherwise been socially prohibited to do (bear in mind that we didn’t go on at length about our accomplishments because talking about yourself is usually boring and and can turn people off by signaling to them that you are egotistical). It worked so well that we tactfully used it on other occasions. It is called the reciprocal compliment. Of course a wingman could and should be ready to help his friend even if its not reciprocated. We call this technique the “compliment in place of brag” and the reciprocal compliment is derived from it. Instead of having to brag on yourself, which is boorish, your wingman can instead compliment you. Working together will allow you to circumvent social rules and increase your social value in an acceptable way. Later on we will examine the “wingman playbook” which are basically social techniques that involve coordinating with your wingman to accomplish social goals.
All too often we are hesitant to lavish someone with a compliment because we think that it will diminish our own social value. We have the notion that it makes us look “weak” or less than the person we are complimenting. The truth is that it actually increases our social value. Besides that person appreciating the compliment others will see you as kind. The confusion comes in when considering relative social value. When we bestow a compliment on someone your social value relative to his changes and although you might receive a small amount of social value for giving the compliment, usually the person receiving the compliment or the person getting bragged on will experience a much larger increase in social value in comparison. Trust me when I say this is nothing to be bent out of shape about for a number of reasons. First and foremost you are helping your friend out and whats good for the goose is good for the gander. You want your entourage to be filled with awesome elite people. There are enormous benefits for that and you should feel good about helping someone you care about. Secondly, while you may feel like you got the short end of the deal in this particular instance when taken in a larger context you should see that in total your social value is still very high (especially if you’ve been investing!) and that you might be closer or even have higher social value overall. This is an important lesson in cooperation which is the most fundamental aspect of any socializing.
A concept related to signaling social value is the idea of “sharing a loss”. There might be times when you want to proceed with a course of action that may order yourself behind the girl you are trying to engage but it is possible to use your wingman to assume some of the responsibility and save you from creating too large of a gap between you and your target. Allow me to illustrate. Consider a situation where you are at a party and you spot a beautiful girl. You're very interested in making time with this girl so you decide that playing beer pong together would be a great way to get to know her. From this point you have several courses of action to make this happen. The first is that you can turn to the girl and tell her that you want to play beer pong and you'd like her to be your partner. Now this increases her social value relative to yours. Obviously she's in high demand and you want her. I applaud your ambition but it is an amateur move nonetheless. A better course of action, one that will cost less social value, involves a wingman. Imagine you are standing next to the girl and your wingman comes up and says “hey grab a partner we are playing beer pong”. Now you turn to the girl next to you and ask if she will be your pong partner. This splits the social value decrease in half. To see why we have to break the interaction down into its constituent parts. The reason your social value is decreasing relative to hers is because you have two “wants” that you're asking her to fulfill. The first is the desire to play beer pong and the second is for her to be your partner. However in the second scenario, you don't desire to play beer pong, your friend desires YOU to play beer pong. Your only “want” in this scenario is for her to be your partner. So in the second scenario, by using your wingman to assume a “want” you've halved the social value debuff. Lets push it a step further. What if you're casually standing near the girl and then your wingman comes up and points to you and the girl and then announces “You two. We just won and need new opponents. You two come play against us”. Now the wingman has assumed both “wants”. He has decreed you be partners and he has expressed his desire for you to play beer pong. Your social value is completely intact and might in fact be even a bit high than before. A good wingman is there to help share losses or assume them completely..."
