Just an idea but, you could try this approach "I am here to do some research, any interest in helping me out?" her: ? What research... "Looking to find out what to absolutely NOT do in a social situation while talking to an attractive woman..." Explains why you are there solo, and sets the stage for her to share what her turn-offs are and any horror stories about guys she has. There is a risk that in eliciting this recall of negative responses she could associate them with you so be sure to distance yourself. Good way to back into how she likes to be approached and learn if she is open to the idea of romance and can also set the stage for some conspiratorial "people watching" where you can dazzle her with your awareness of body language, demonstrate your knowledge of IOI's and introduce the cocky-funny routine of putting words in someone elses mouth from across the room. This is really fun for you both if you can get her to play along... I.e. based on their body language, what do you think he is saying to her... etc.
