1) Movies are bad first dates in general, however you were at her place so you had a good opportunity to escalate in private.
2) Unless she was giving you a complete body language rejection, I felt you could have escalated.
Why did you sit apart during a movie? You might have been able to escalate through the simple things such as teasing about the movie, fighting over the dvds to initiate hand contact, etc.
Also, the date is really movie dependent... what did you watch? Did she choose or you?

If you were at her place on her couch, you could(should) have escalated.
I like it when it is inconvenient and awkward, it is that much more attracted when you just grab her legs and pull her closer to you.
Don't wait for signals. Make a move, respectfully, and see if she rejects you. If she says "not yet" or "I just want to watch the movie" it doesn't mean you can't still escalate a few minutes later or once movie is winding down.
She isn't going to freak out and end the date if you go for a kiss and she turns you down. It will just make her think about kissing you, and then she'll be that much more receptive when you try again later.
Obviously if she has read profile and messaged back and forth she was comfortable with you, and inviting you to her place instead of a bar/neutral place means she was ready to get physical with you.
