Oooh that's a toughie. I would imagine 'dating, just to see how/where things go' would be OK. But if you're 'serious' about either, you should only be with that one. Plus if there's the thing of you not thinking there's a "long term" with either, then just date one AFTER the other. You could surprise yourself. Dating both, and trying to keep that information separate could get you into some hot water, and in the end will do the opposite of 'boosting their confidence'.
