At my university, girls seem to be afraid of traditional dates. Of course, people absolutely still go out on dates, they just don't really call it that. It seems like at least in my age group, girls like to keep things a little bit more low-key. The word date brings up images of a man taking his wife to dinner or something to people.

Can anybody give me a guide on how to ask a girl on a date in a more modern context so I don't scare people off? All I can really think of is inviting a girl to a party, but that doesn't seem to always work out. In other words, what is an example of a courtship with a woman? Women can smell my cliched ideas from a mile away (getting a coffee, watching a movie) and I'm looking for some new ones.
