I hope I can help. When talking to a girl or anyone for that matter. Listening is very important. Make small talk but let them talk and ask questions and/or add to the conversation without interupting them. To many times I catch myself worrying about how I'm being percieved in a conversation, and in doing so I miss what she is saying. Starting a conversation is hard but once you get her talking about her intetests or experiences, you're golden. You can ask questions about what she just said or share a similar experience you've had. Odds are she's also nervous about talking to you.

Ill give you an example, a girl I like was recently telling me she went to a cabin on a lake in wisconsin over the weekend. I started by asking her how far north it was, I asked this because I havr experience fishing and camping in wisconsin and also love the outdoors. Now without interupting her I asked if she ever goes fishing, likes to camp,etc. Before I knew it we were talking about fishing for 10 minutes and I asked her if she would like to go fishing with a couple friends I know would be down to fish with us. She said sure and I got her number. Without even knowing it I pretty much just asked her out and she said yes.

TL;DR. Listen without interupting her, and continue the conversation by asking questions and sharing your experiences without trying to one-up her. Remember she's probably nervous about talking to you to.

Now do the same thing for the girls...

Girls are not mysterious creatures in real life, only in your mind.

You are trying to reinvent the wheel when you've already bought the damned 2014 edition of the car!

You just need to find some people to put in the back seat.

I just can't figure out how to simply talk to a girl..... I simply don't know what to say around them and believe me I've tried a few times but every time I just felt awkward doing it.

The problem is that you don't "figure out" what to say. You just need to LISTEN to them and pay attention to the overall situation.

Make a question or some comment on something you observe because you've been paying attention rather than trying to "think" of something to say.
LISTEN to them. Stop trying to think about what to say while they are talking. Their response will give you more than enough to talk about.
After they stop talking/responding, you think about what they said.
You reply based on what they JUST said. Dig deeper into what she said by trying to get at what motivates her or trying to get at her emotions regarding the subject.

Rinse and repeat.
