When starting a conversation.. how random can the stuff you talk to her about be? And what topics need to be avoided?

Talking about college and postgrad parties but could apply anywhere really. I feel like it's really easy to approach women, meet them and then ask them their name. Then I end up falling in to the "oh do you go to school here? etc. type conversation that goes nowhere.

Here's the thing: that kind of conversation doesn't HAVE to go nowhere. In fact, "Oh, do you go to school here?" could easily be an opener for a conversation that lasts hours, if you're paying attention closely to what she says. (Which requires you to give absolutely NO thought to what you're going to say next, while she's talking.)

What kind of stuff is interesting and random enough but acceptable to talk about? Something like "Do you like to travel?" (acting like you just came from another conversation talking about traveling) What else? Something that could maybe even turn flirty?

You don't want random. You don't need to be interesting. You need to be interested in what she's saying, and PRESENT.

You don't need to be verbally flirty. Aside from being playful. But nothing overtly sexual in your words..... is best.

What should be avoided other than school, weather, etc.? College major?

School, major..... these are GREAT topics to dive into and go deep. Weather would be boring because it's usually not something that pertains to deep motivations and emotions.

You can talk about just about anything as long as you seem genuinely passionate and/or intelligent about the subject. Don't just walk up and say HEY DON'T YOU THINK FLIBJIBS ARE SUPER GRIPPY?? Because this will make no sense and she will think you are a retard. But you can certainly walk up to her and say "hey you know I just came out of the bathroom and there was soooo much crap smeared on the walls." It's random as fuck, but it's not totally insane, you see? As long as she's a person who isn't offended by a guy talking about poop, and many aren't, you can probably spark a conversation that way.

Avoid topics like murder, rape, child abuse, that kind of thing.
