If it doesn't make financial sense then why are you living there? As for friends, join a club or organization. Don't go right home after class. See if you can do homework or just hang out with classmates. You're bound to find someone to connect with.

A sports team? A club? Greek organization? Intramural something? Anything.

I'm in the same situation currently, but I live over an hour away. Here's what i'm doing as I just started my sophomore year as well.

1.Get involved as much as you can: I stay after class and go play soccer at my gym. Try to become friends with people playing and tell them to invite you whenever they meet up to play.

Talk to the people who sit next to you in class. You will have the most opportunities to connect with these people since they will sit next to you all semester. Do it before class starts and talk anything interesting, have their attention and make the conversation interesting.

3.Clubs are the best way to find people with similar interests. These people like the same thing as you do so it's easy to make a connection with them. Also a great way to network if you want to work on projects.

Cold approach! You will never get another opportunity in life to have all these young and beautiful girls congregated in one area.
Bottom line: just put yourself out there as much as you can. Take the initiative and interact with people.
