I tried this recently and the wing (and myself as the wing) pretended we were just passing by and tried to listen in on the convo from out of the girl's sight. However, the wings couldn't hear anything or not well enough to give feedback.

Even if you could have heard there is no way this would have worked out well. Just ask them to dance or make a comment about your environment. Be confident but if they say no don't be sad humans are mean lol just move on.

Do you open a set the same size as your group?

Yeah sure, if I'm out with a friend I'm there to hang out with him and also to hopefully meet a girl so I would look for a couple of cute chicks and go say hi.

So you mean if it's just the 2 of us? Hmmm he might go pee or get a drink or talk to a girl on his own, but I'm not his baby sitter haha. Usually I go out with more than just one buddy so I'm never ditching him if I excuse myself but if I was out with just one friend I'd probably say hey come with me to talk to this chick real fast.

She probably has friends there. Pretty much everyone has friends.
