If you really want to take this girl on a date, than her friendship is not going to be enough.

Go on and ask her out. In a not too distant future you'll regret if you don't. If you're concerned about what other people think in case she says no, don't be and own your decision instead: you liked her you asked her out, that's the age old process to keep the human specie going.

It was a mistake to listen to your friend.

And it was probably a mistake to tell her about the crush. What you needed to do was physically escalate with her (carefully and slowly, while paying attention to her feedback along the way).

What was her response to your confession? Like what exactly did she say and do?

I really do like her and we have really good chemistry, but I guess I'm just worried what it'll do to our friendship if I ask.

Do this if you wish to sink your chances. If you haven't already by bringing up this crush thing. This is basic stuff in the FAQ and in the sidebar: you SHOW how you feel by making moves, basically. Making these confessions before you've had the balls to make a move, only highlights your inability to make a move. It highlights a lack of confidence that's going to be unattractive.

How do you propose hanging out with a friend? It's not much different. You're just making it complicated. Cut it out.

Look, just think of a novel or interesting place to go. Maybe a coffee shop or place to eat. And you make a date with yourself. You're going to treat yourself. THEN, you invite her to join you. So now it's not you trying to prove yourself to her or some bullshit like that. It's about her choosing whether or not to join the fun thing.

And if you're familiar enough with her, ask her over to your place for a movie night.
