Unfortunately it is pretty important as you stated in your first paragraph. The main thing though is that women are looking for someone who isn't a bum, earning (significantly) less than them or just from a lower socioeconomic bracket. Socioeconomic status says a lot about a person in terms of whether they will have similar interests and aspirations so it's not all just about money, it's about your overall standing with yourself and in society. If you are a motivated individual and you have a head on your shoulders that says more to a girl about your socioeconomic status and thus compatibility than, say, which car you drive would.
