First off, is this in India because the protocol is slightly different and something I don't quite understand.

But that is feeding the fire in America. With social media everywhere women think they are goddesses or super heroes or whatever because they get so many likes and in turn so much validation form men. Not good.

If I engage a girl on FB I never mention her looks. I use humor or common interest but never never feed that fire of how beautiful she is. YMMV (your mileage may vary)

I'd say avoid compliments overall until you really get to know her. Compliments are mostly useless unless they come from a genuine place of authenticity. Obviously, you're not at that level. It makes you desperate and less desirable.

I think its a little weird to randomly compliment a girl.

Instead, I would try to have some real life interactions. Talk to her. Just about ordinary stuff. Maybe tease her. Play about.

Also, don't focus solely on her. Joke around and make friends with other people in class too. Ugly, weird, old, whoever else. Knowing other people and having fun with other people will make you more compelling.

Make her earn those compliments from you ;) dont give em out too easy or it makes them cheap.
