Sounds like he hasn't made a move. Mystery method would have him engaging her and giving indicators of disinterest.

So he should be giving indicators of DISinterest (which he kind of is doing already by not making a move?) but he needs to be more engaging / DHV? (I'm new to the theory of seduction)
Is that the best way to 'make the move' on a friend/girl you already kind of know? I have some success with cold approach, but am clueless when it comes to hooking up with girls I know.
My friends just seem to flirt with girls in their social circle and definitely show interest (which is wrong?) and then just ask them out and it workds for them, but I assume it's not ideal. But then my friends that are 'aloof' and don't show interest or flirt never get the girl.

As for best way to pull a girl you already know - the mystery method way would be to pull all the hot girls in their mutual social circle. To pull hotter chicks than the target girl. To get "advice" on the cool chicks he's bagging off of Tinder.
Basically, put the target into the friend zone.
Show this chick, he's sexually desirable, and let her come to the conclusion herself that she doesn't measure up.
Use her vanity and insecurity against her.
Cause if he pipes up now, after being in the friend zone for so long, he's not going to get the girl.
But at least he would be free of a false friend.
