For me, I wasn't able to make any progress until I got mad. Mad at the woman who fucked me over. Mad at my parents for giving me such a shit deal. Mad at myself for playing the victim for so long, for refusing the answer the call to become the strongest version of myself. Your friend may not be willing to hear the truth about his mistakes and shortcomings. If he gets upset at your criticisms of his behavior (whiny, insecure, etc), just make sure he knows you're trying to help him, that you have his best interest in mind.

And fuck going for drinks, take him to the gym and lift. Talk with him about this between sets.

be there, and give options. Sad night in: you bring the pizza and beer. Sad sunday afternoon, you bring the chips, beer and turn on the game. Sad Monday morning, you pick him up and take him to your favorite pho place
