Yesterday, I went out dancing, and this woman (lets call her Abby) introduced herself to me. She was nice, and she spoke about how she's looking to make new friends, so we exchanged contact info, as well as pretty much formed an ad hoc friend group with some other nice folks that very night. Although Abby was nice, I am not into her as anything more than a possible friend, as she isn't my type, and I'm also just not very attracted to her (not that there's anything wrong with her).

During the course of our conversation, Abby mentioned having a friend named Hannah from Netherlands, who is currently back home in Netherlands for the holidays. I said, "wow, I also know a woman named Hannah from the Netherlands who is currently there." Funnily enough, it turned out we knew the same Hannah. Small world.

Abby gushed about how gorgeous Hannah is, and I half-jokingly mentioned that the only reason I even know Hannah is that I hit on her on campus. Background is that I had gotten Hannah's number, but this was shortly before she had to leave for the holidays, so we haven't had a chance to go out yet.

Later in the night on the dancefloor, Abby approached me again, and told me she was wondering about how well we'd "work together" or something like that. Not being into her, I didn't know how to respond to this, but I also didn't want to make her feel bad, so I just said "I guess we'd have to see."

Later still in the night, Abby tells me she's meeting somebody at Denny's for a date (she specifically tells me that she doesn't intend to sleep with him and is only going for the free food, though I didn't even inquire about whether she was going to sleep with him or ask any questions at all really, but okay, I wouldn't judge a girl for sleeping with a guy or for just being interested in free food). Before saying her goodbyes, she talks some more about Hannah and how beautiful she is, and to be polite, I tell her "it makes sense you're friends; birds of a feather flock together." She beamed at this, and told me that the reason she hadn't pursued anything with me is that I am interested in Hannah.

Now I'm kinda worried that I've led her on by complimenting her looks. I dunno, I know women place a lot of importance on their physical appearances, and their appearances are even more important to their self-esteem than men's appearances are to us men. So, sometimes I like to boost a woman's self-esteem by complimenting her looks. It's not like I was lying, I think Abby has the sorts of looks that many men would be attracted to. She's just not my type.

Abby contacts me today, asking me how it's going and what I'm up to. I let her know that I'll be seeing some friends' bands tonight, and tell her she's free to come down. She invites me over to her place for drinks before we head to the show so that she doesn't have to show up alone (I don't know what the problem with showing up to shit alone is, I show up to everything alone, but okay).

Maybe this is all in my head, but I'm a little worried about what her intentions are. I hope this is totally on the platonic. But at the same time, if it comes to a point where she makes a clear advance and I'm in a position where I have to reject her, I have to keep in mind that she's good friends with a woman I am into, and any interaction between Abby and I is going to colour Hannah's reactions toward me. Nobody wants to go out with the person who made their friend sad, you know? But I also can't lead Abby on.

So internet, what do I do?
