Mechanical/chemical Engineer or Ironworker?

Between the two I chose engineer as I didn't want to be working outside in the elements my entire life.

I would intern at a engineering place or shadow somebody in the field. See how their day to day life is. If you like it, do it.

You can't let other people on the internet dictate life decisions like this. You must experience them. That is why life is worth living.

Be aware that most engineers are beta to the core. And when you are in a place with certain dynamics they will rub on you, no matter how hard you try. Plus there is the social stigma of being an engineer that you will have to carry all your life.

That said professionally engineering opens a lot of doors. I believe that the suggestion given above of following some engineers around to see how they live the day to day will help you make up your mind.

I ended up as a steelworker. Paid my house off and went debt free by 35.. And I didn't even start till I was 25

Try and get some experience doing both. Me being me though would go down the ironworking route, mainly because its earning while you learn, plus its a skill that will always make you money. If you get sick of it in 10 years time then there is still plenty of time to go to college.
