If you’d prefer to read the script instead of watching the video, here it is:

In this video, I’m going to cover three key

disciplines from Ryan Holiday’s book “The

Obstacle is the Way” and show how you can

apply them to crush any problem and be more

successful in everything you do.

Said three disciplines are:

  1. Perception

  2. Action

  3. Will

  4. 1st discipline: perception

How we perceive the world can be our forte or our

impediment.

To prosper over outwardly hopeless situations, there

are a few things we should be mindful of:

– staying objective

– controlling our emotions and staying cool

– choosing to see the positive

– calming down

– ignoring what limits others

– seeing things in perspective

–focusing on what we can control

Events, neither good nor bad, happen. Our real

power - our perception, lies in the fact that we can

choose how we view an event.

We can choose to reframe an adverse event

and turn it into a favorable one.

Get a grip on your emotions, and don’t let them

run you.

Ask yourself: “Should I be upset about this?” as

a way to check-in with yourself.

Detach from your circumstances by pretending they

are happening to someone else. After all, we give

the best advice to others, don’t we?

Focus on things in your control only.

Your inner world is the only thing you have power

over.

It consists of emotions, attitudes, desires, decisions,

and determination.

Everything else? Not up to you, and not worth

wasting time and energy on.

Love what is here and now, not what may be ahead.

Lean into the present moment - it’s all you’ve got.

Enduring hardships is not in vain. Have you heard of

post-traumatic growth? When faced with

adversity, such as an injury, some individuals

experience a positive psychological change.

This concept is expressed in many languages in the

saying, “What doesn’t kill you makes you

stronger.”

What did you overcome that made you stronger?

Leave your answer in the comments.

  1. 2nd discipline: Action

Action is an ordinary occurrence. A directed activity,

which destroys obstacles, is not.

History is full of people who were dealt a rough hand

in life, but took decisive action and eventually

triumphed.

Take a moment to think, vent, and complain if you

must, but make no excuses.

Start now.

There will never be a perfect time nor perfect

conditions to take action. You might be waiting

forever. Just start moving.

Be persistent. It’s ok to feel down by the lack of

results. It’s not okay to surrender to the external

pressure. The success is often not a result of some

profound aha-moment, but trial and error, staying

relentless and refusing to budge.

As Epictetus said: “Persist and resist.”

Learn from failure. Incorporate feedback and correct

the course of your action accordingly. Failure is

valuable because it exposes our weakness, yet so

many people never truly learn from their mistakes.

At this moment, each of us has at least one difficulty

in their life. Don’t look at it as a daunting task.

Break it down into smaller chunks, and tackle the

first one. And then the next one. “Follow the

process, not the prize.”

You are a person of quality. Everything you do must

be of quality, as well.

Perhaps we had to take a job some will say is

beneath us to pay the bills. There is no shame in

focusing on the task at hand. Whatever you do, do it

as best as you can.

Perfection is an illusion. You have to use what

you’ve got in life.

Stop chasing perfection and become a radical

pragmatist - keep your ideals in mind but be

practical and pursue what is possible.

If you are in a seemingly inferior position in life,

such as being low on money, this can be your

advantage. You get to be more creative than

someone relying on brute force, size, or funds and

hit them by a flank maneuver.

Channel your negative emotions, and they will

propel you forward, adding fuel to your fire.

Do not meekly follow the rules like the most,

undermine them when necessary and use to your

advantage.

Be offensive in life. Sometimes success is seized by

the one who is exhausted, but still gets up early and

puts in the work.

You can prepare thoroughly and still fail. Your task is

to give your best and to train yourself to be the

go-getter. Even failure provides a precious

opportunity to practice acceptance and to move on.

  1. 3rd discipline: WILL

“Will is the discipline of heart and soul.”

Unlike perception and action, our will is truly and

completely in our control.

Will is a precursor for correct perception and action.

Fortifying your will won’t help suddenly. Like a

fortress, you build it brick by brick.

Any goal worth achieving will require your practice

and patience. There is no way around it.

Some people perform a mental exercise,

“premortem.” Instead of analyzing how things

went wrong after an event, they brainstorm all the

possible ways they could fail before making a

decision.

Anticipate the worst so you can redirect your action.

Ask yourself, “what if…”.

Answer with: “then I will,” and don’t be passive in

life.

Remember - the world is not out to get you. It’s

nothing personal. Accept people and events for what

they are. It doesn’t mean you’re weak - you are

indifferent.

But go beyond mere acceptance. Choose to love

everything that happens to you, the ancient stoic

concept of “Amor Fati.”

Maintain a positive mental attitude and choose to

see everything that happens as good or necessary.

Have perseverance. Endure and play the long

game.

Embrace your mortality and let it empower you.

The nature of life is cyclical, so now the struggle

never ends. Always find the strength to start

again.
