This is my experience with a fearful avoidant (aka anxious avoidant or disorganized attachment).

The honeymoon phase was bliss. I thought I had met my person and she told me the same. We bonded quickly and thoroughly. The connection felt like a love from a previous life. We had so much in common and almost everything felt compatible and aligned. We shared beautiful moments and created lasting memories. The physical intimacy was spectacular. The future was bright. It went well for several years. We lived together for 2 years. Her family welcomed and embraced me.

Like any relationship there were challenges along the way. Communication from both sides slowly dwindled. Still love and partnership felt strong and lasting. Then after a few months of challenges for her personal life I was suddenly discarded and her true selfish ways were fully revealed and I was completely heartbroken while she seemed unaffected. She didn't waste any time finding new men. I'm left in despair, thoroughly confused and betrayed. Not a happy ending.

I think it is important to understand the wounds that went into creating this fear of intimacy… and secondly know that you can’t just make it go away. She’ll probably struggle for the rest of her life to fully trust affection and care. Best thing I can suggest is talk to her about how to know when she’s slipping into it,, how much space to give her,,, and also not making her feel like she’s in trouble for backing away no matter how hard it is for YOU. Code words could help? Hard part is she’s probably not even able to admit it when it is happening until after it’s passed. I wish you the best of luck. If you really love this person it is possible to maintain and take care of your connection. Also Working on your own self reassurance will help. Knowing that she still does love you.
