Hello everyone. I feel that before I get to the meat of the topic, I need to provide a brief but crucial background about myself in order to put my interactions into context.
I am currently 22, and for the majority of my short life, I have not fared well in the social skills department. Middle school and high school were NOT good times for me socially, and though my academics were fine, my ability to talk and make friends was definitely underdeveloped compared to some others. As I've learned recently (but have yet to fully internalize), comparisons with others can lead to a sickly self-image. Nevertheless, I can't shake off the thought in the back of my head that social skills are a must, as no man is an island and that life could be more enjoyable when sharing it with others.
At 17, I got into a top university on the US East Coast and thought all my hard-work had paid off. I could go somewhere where my socially inept ass would find company, or at least be understood. But most people at college were light-years ahead of me socially, and though I met many people and made some friends, I always felt that people were not being genuine with me and really saying what was on their mind. Which brings me to my actual point.
Yesterday night, I met up with a friend I met senior year of HS, who I'll call A. We've been kicking it once every week or so. Upon arriving at his place, he asked if I wanted to go to his buddy's place. I obliged. At said buddy's house, who I'll call B, we chatted with his parents and then headed to his backyard to toke. I noticed that B, while he greeted me in a friendly manner, was hardly addressing me and mostly just talking to A and his parents around him. A was immersed in conversation with B's parents for much of our toking session.
A while later, C arrives. C is a mutual friend of A and B, but we had never met. He sat down and immersed himself in the convo with A, B, and B's parents. Soon, the parents left and it was just us four. Well, the others get to talking about other topics, in particular a recent rave festival. To make a long story short, I was sitting there, hardly able to add to this conversation concerning events and people I had never heard of, and I had something happen to me that is what I refer to in the title of this post.
It seemed A, B, and C were speaking about the rave, but my gut instinct was telling me that they were passive-aggressively dishing out insults at me in the midst of their seemingly innocent conversation. They would mention musical groups at the rave that I never heard of, with suspicious names, and while one of them spoke, he looked to one of the others and back to me in quick succession. This is after the fact that they largely ignored my presence. I became uncomfortable - whenever I reacted with a laugh (at the ridiculousness of it all) they would laugh as well, but more in a jeering manner. In effect, without directly saying it to my face, it seemed they were talking among themselves while insinuating my unwelcomeness there.
This has happened to me before - at least, I have been in a very similar scenario and have felt the same gut feeling, that these people are indirectly mocking me and insulting my stature and composure. B and C are virtually strangers, but A is someone I considered a friend (and I have been mulling that over as of late). I felt anger at the whole thing and I didn't know what to do. To be honest, TRP has been a place to learn from my mistakes and grow when nobody else was able to help me, and I'm asking now whether or not this has happened to others or I am just off my rocker/overthinking the whole thing.
TL;DR: I go to kickback with friend A. His friends B & C are there. Together, they shut me out of the convo and play this game where they taunt me without saying it directly. Confused as how to identify this (light-hearted teasing or something else?)
