Who else hates when people treat depression like it's a choice?

Your absolutely right, depression is often unfairly framed as something you can just magically wish away through therapy or some other bs. Well it's not. Its something many people are just plain and simply born with, no different than your eye color. I was born into the best family you could ask for. I've been supported and loved my entire life and given everything I could have wanted and then some. Yet here I am, miserable and depressed every day all day for what seems like no good reason. Even my own parents who love me more than anything sugarcoat my depression and say things like "well just go to therapy" or "find a new hobby" its exhausting. I think people that are lucky enough to not have to deal with depression simply can't understand how people with seemingly good lives can have it just as hard as anyone else. Take care brother, many of us are in the same boat!

Free will doesn't exist anyway mate. Everything everyone has ever done is as a result of the available information, opportunities and potential.

There is no way that I've been able to disprove the above.

As much as we'd like to think that doing hard things is an example of free will. It is still just using the available information within the confines of your potential, when it's opportune to do so.

Anyone who's ever dealt with it- but remember that while depression isn't a choice, how you decide to deal with it IS.

On one hand I absolutely understand you. You're basically saying that because of depression you sometimes act not that good, right? I absolutely understand that. However I think you can't just avoid accountability on everything because of depression.

I just have a question... what does that have to do with this sub? Are you saying that you're sexist because of depression? Because I also had depression that on some periods of my life really let me do very dumb stuff... a lot of drugs. But on no point in my life did I try to blame anyone for my depression, because I gave it strongly myself and choose to not deal with it in a healthy way. Do you have a reason to blame anyone for your depression or did I just misunderstand your hole comment?

Edit: I don't want to hurt you or just assume you're a sexist who blames everything on women, because thats just honestly what I think of this sub. If you're not that way then pretend that I only wrote the first "paragraph".

You don't have a choice whether or not you have depression, but you DO have a choice as to whether or not your depression makes you act like an asshole. Don't blame your depression for treating other people badly, work to overcome it. It's hard, requires work, and sometimes requires intensive self contemplation or even therapy to get past.

And that's coming from someone who was seriously depressed for most of my teenage and adult life and had suicidal ideation for nearly a decade. I -know- how tough it is, but a disability (whether physical, mental, or emotional) is not a free pass to be a jerk.
