There are no designated male/female chores in my home. If either of us see something that needs to be done, we do it. I have never asked my husband to take out the trash and I've only ever asked him to do something for me if i was absolutely unable to handle it myself.

It doesn't sound like you want to be a house wife and if that's true, then I don't know what to tell you. You're going to have to figure out what type of role he expects from you and be willing to adjust your future choice to better help reflect that.

You aren't married yet; is this what you want for the rest of your life? If you cannot depend on him to do things, then do them yourself if they are important to you. What will happen when/if you decide to have children? Will you be able to juggle career/kids/husband/all the household duties?

On the other hand, he might be somewhat depressed at his prospects and at being downsized. Those sort of things can really knock the wind out of a person's sails.
