I recall listening to my father and uncles when I was a kid. Once or twice a year we would go on a camping trip as a family, and My dad and his brothers would sit around the campfires and just talk. No specific topic they would just talk.

They were a bunch of dumbass old farmers, half of them didn't finish grade school, none of them finished college. None of them ever left their home country, none of them had ever been on wikipedia, none of them had ever sat down and watched the science channel because cable TV cost money and none of them had it. 99% of their time in life was spent on their farm working.

They would have these discussions that were incredible to listen to, discussions about how the physics behind dark holes, the warring philosophies between different nations in world war 2, biblical history discussions, the details of saturn 5 rocket systems, The Ballistics of specific firearm rounds and which ones were better and why, our family history, what the future held. Every topic you could possibly imagine would get talked about, and it was from the least educated, least worldly people i'd ever known, but they were thinkers, they would talk about stuff above their pay grade. I don't know how much of what they said was right, neither did they, they weren't scientists, but they had ideas and logic processes that they would run through.

Fast foward to 25 years old, I'm one of 3 of my friend group that isn't college educated, 80+% of the people I know in this group have seen multiple continents, spent decades in expensive schools, and are self proclaimed highly educated and highly intelligent folks. When I meet up with them they talk about pop stars, tv shows, video games, doing drugs, whoring around, and endlessly consuming other useless products. If you even attempt to bring up anything technical you'll just get made fun of in passing as they make the next quip about how they are going to be ripping ass all night because they had taco bell that morning.

The smartest people have the tools to learn and communicate information much faster than ever before in history, Thanks to this technology surges further and further ahead, but in my opinion. The average everyday human being has skated backwards horribly in the last 50 years, they are less intelligent than probably ever before in history.
