(26M) I need some advice in terms of next steps (and while some of this may seem braggy, it is not intended that way). Having recently completed (month out) my Masters in Terrorism and CT studies and turning down a position in DC due to salary (offered 50k, but i now have a DoD TS) I am looking to make a career change/lateral move to a defense contractor to get the more important letters attached to my clearance (SCI/SSBI). Although my resume has been beefed up (working in AML currently for more than 1.5 yrs) and polished, I am still lacking the experience necessary to be considered for the positions. I am looking at continuing improving myself by using free software for learning Russian (goal is to become fluent within a 1.5 year) (transparent language if anyone knows it) and am looking to begin online cyber security courses. Does anyone have any idea (for a novice) of a place to learn about cyber security (malware, coding, hacking, etc) or am I completely wasting my time by doing so (I've looked at Cybrary but idk how informative/useful it is). Should I choose another topic (could go for certifications within my current employment, but will be required to work additional time if they pay for my CAMS or I pay it myself)? I would like to get out of my current job due to not wanting to be in the field (although i see a link between CT and AML) and there being no growth potential. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I already search for and apply for at least 2 jobs per day
  2. Read to either continue my own education (Terrorism/CT/Intelligence topics)/learn new topics
  3. Top performer at current position
  4. have contact at 1 defense contractor who has referred me for positions

Is there more that I should be doing?
