I wasn't trying to be rude or pedantic. Her confusion is common, many other people and a couple journalists made the same mistake. Is there a better way to clear up misconceptions like this in the future without appearing pedantic?

I don't know, maybe you are right. I don't know anything about Tesla's solar tech.
There are probably better ways of getting your point across. Just showing up and saying "Wrong!" is almost never going to work. You can read on this subject, IIRC Socrates and Ben Franklin were pretty good at convincing people of things. Cialdini, Carnegie and many others have also written on the subject.
The worst way to argue is directly. You end up butting up against the brick wall of the other person's pride. And you arouse their fighting instinct. The best way is to let them come around to your way of thinking on their own and then let them twist it so that they were never wrong in the first place.
Your status also matters. If this was Barack Obama arguing this way he would have gotten away with it.
So I'd study more. And then pick battles where you have something to gain.
These are valuable skills that are worth working on. I probably need to spend more time on it as well.
