I don't know what a good place to ask this is, I decided to do it here because I can get the straightest answers and opinions.

I'm remodeling a property to rent out. I don't have time to do it anymore, and started hitting up Craiglist to find cheap labor. Drywalling, painting, etc. I get a lot of responses with Pros who want to charge $300 for a small project.

But eventually I found a Mexican guy in a polo and a gold watch who showed up on my doorstep with 2 tatted-up Mexicans and did the project for under $100. Based on my estimates of how long it took, they're probably making under $5/hr each (I think their handler is pocketing 45-50% and not just 33%).

Question is: why are they willing to work for so little, and should I be more cautious? My theory is that they are felons and/or illegal, and their handler is leveraging that. But they seem happy with the payment, and excited to do more projects.

Does anyone have any experience with these guys?
