I would like to point a couple of stuff.

Muscles chief purpose aren't for providing. Rather they are for fighting and intimidation. Fighting lesser men for the leadership position or for instilling respect through fear. If you are the biggest guy around in a room, and also the most shredded, people will naturally respect you. In ancient times, warriors were more muscular than farmers. Muscles indicate combat prowess, the ability to win in combat with other men and take their stuff and wives.

Also muscles cannot be built without high testosterone levels. Testosterone is the chief precursor of a muscular figure. The alpha male is the male with the highest testosterone levels. When you are in a high testosterone state, not only are you extremely physically ripped and jacked, but you are also in an incredible alpha mindset. The last thing you want to do (when in high test state) is be the lovey dovey boyfriend of a woman, when you could just fuck her and dump her instead.

Keeping all this in mind, women don't like muscular men because they make good providers, but rather because muscularity is a physical symptom of high testosterone levels, thus signaling that said muscular dude is an alpha male. If he is muscular, his sons will also be muscular alpha men with a thirst for power, because they will also have high testosterone levels. They will have an easier time surviving and dominating other men, and forging their path to leadership in our ancient barbaric days.

Men don't respect muscular men because they make good providers. They respect muscular men because they are intimated by them and are scared of what might happen if they piss them off.

The difference in Alpha and Beta men is a modern societal construct and is entirely about how many friends you have. Alpha males simply have more friends than Betas. Ultimately, human fitness has never really been about how strong you are, or fast, or how pretty. It has always boiled down to the strength of your network.

I mean, being strong is lovely when you're hunting, but you know what even better than having the strength of 2 men? Having the social skills to lead 3 other people on a hunt. Shit, farming is usually a women's job in the societies where it's not a gender neutral profession.

Also, remember, in ancient societies, men did not provide for women. Hunter-gatherer societies tend to be egalitarian, especially in more nomadic peoples, which means that there is no accumulation of wealth, nor nepotism. In essence, everything is shared with everyone. Although most hunter-gatherer societies have sharply defined gender roles, these are borne primarily from necessity, and many cultures had greater success with gender integrated hunting than with only male hunters.

A man's position as a beta is caused by withdrawal from society. In ancient tribes, this meant death. In modern society, it means that Jenny from down the street won't give you a hand-job in her Jetta.
