In days gone by, the man was the least obligated party but that reflects reality

I wonder if anyone can still understand just how wrong you are with this topic. This man may have had the least obligation under the law. But the law was not this bloated, inefficient, bullshit apparatus that insisted on thrusting its nose into every part of every man's life.

There was more to society, in the post WWII days, than obeying the law. Men behaved honorably in the sight of their parents, their friends, their women, and most importantly, in the sight of other men. There was a great cost to breaking your word - but your word wasn't given lightly because you were taught from early times to know what it meant. Loyalty was something you could expect from family, employers, neighbors, friends - even wives. Your nation could expect it from you when you were called upon. (My great-uncle was a WWII paratrooper - he wouldn't step on a bug because he was loyal to the entire insect kingdom, who had knitted the silk that brought him safely to the ground behind enemy lines. I am sure that the fellow who gave his wife this kingly gift felt the same way.)

The law is a poor fucking substitute when the above all falls apart and turns to shit. In days gone by, a man like Teddy Roosevelt could utter the immortal words: "Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike."

And it was true. Still is. That's real inner game, to translate it into TRP talk.
