The most common modern (feminist) take on The Taming of the Shrew is that Katherine is abused and broken into submission by her cruel husband Petruchio.
But at the start of the play, Katherine is a complete bitch. She's angry at an unfair world, a father who will give her away to any jerk with money who'll take her, and a manipulative sister who everyone favors over her. She's got a huge princess entitlement complex from being handed everything and never having to lift a finger or utter a thank you.
Along comes Petruchio. Katherine attempts to dismiss him and treats him like crap as she does everyone else. Petruchio convinces her father to let him marry Kate, and the father is happy to agree to this without even knowing a damn thing about the kind of man Petruchio is.
Petruchio denies Katherine basic comforts. He doesn't give to her food, clothes, or rest until she follows by the rules he sets for giving her those things. She learns that necessities are not free and that it is necessary to do for others so they will do for you. She learns compromise and how to trust and respect someone other than herself.
In that sense, she becomes tame rather than wild. Tame meaning that she learns cooperation and compromise, not of who she is but how she achieves her aims.
This is a tale of a woman brought up spoiled rotten. A woman who never learned the values of compromise or teamwork her whole life because everyone cowered before a petulant child. When a man comes along who holds his frame and shows her that his favor must be earned, she learns to finally value others.
So too are beautiful women who have had everything in life handed to them. Beta after beta showers her with attention and gifts without her doing anything to earn it. A beautiful young woman can treat men poorly, and she will still have many men who will take her up.
When a red pill man comes along and "acts like an asshole" by standing up to her and calling her out on her shit, he is truly doing her a favor. He is giving her the first wake up call in her life. He is teaching her what it means to earn something. He is giving her a glimpse of the person behind that pretty face. And as time wears on, the pretty face will fade, to be replaced by the person behind it. She will live with that pretty face for a decade or two, but she will live with the person behind it for the rest of her life.
So gentlemen, call women out on their bullshit. Tame the shrews. You'll be doing them a favor.
