This one is a pretty interesting commentary. It would be great to find more of this kind of info to gain some more understanding of society and gender roles. Also, the final comment regarding how some things stay suspiciously the same (the mother being the caregiver and homemaker, whether society deemed her as the one with the higher sex drive or not) is worth some more reading.

Social history is one of the toughest things to research. I've seen this idea come up every so often and I'm skeptical.
Imagine also a time when a woman's only sexual outlet was her husband and she married practically right after puberty. Imagine that the man really has little incentive to have kids but the woman has baby fever. She's a teen girl and I think many of us know what it's like when teen girls get baby fever.
Going back to the Greeks, the Lysistrata is an interesting source. In it, no one suggests having sex with anyone other than spouses. Monogamy isn't questioned.
I think it's telling that the free love movement involved lots more incidence of rape. Once women and men were unshackled from marriage and monogamy, it was women who started putting on the brakes. You can see that in the gay vs. lesbian community.
I think this ancient idea that women were sex crazy is really the idea that your wife was sex crazy. In the ancient world, wives rarely ventured from their house and husbands were free to partake of prostitutes whenever they felt like it. I can imagine the husband coming home from a brothel and finding it a burden to have sex with his wife. Kind of a Married With Children vibe, although Al never cheated. Still, there's evidence that men lose interest in the same partner as the years pass and women don't. Women's interest remains constant (albeit much less than a man's).
