This is why I burst a blood vessel when feminists have the nerve to think that women have less opportunities. I have a friend that works at GameStop and his manager received a lot of applications from qualified men that know video games, but he turned them all down for an airhead of a girl just because she was hot. She didn't even have retail experience and doesn't even like gaming.

This will get worse. Legislating is passing to apply Title IX approach to STEM hiring. Just like men's college sports have been decimated by Title IX rules, STEM-related changes in scholarships, funding, hiring, everything will crush male involvement in large portions of STEM-related education and corporate. Small tech firms will be the best and only choice for white male STEM employees who will then get taken to the cleaners on health insurance bills.

That's okay. The companies that continue to hire white male STEM workers will still see the greatest return on their investment compared to anyone else. Where else can you find that blend of creativity, resourcefulness, intelligence, and a good balance of compliance coupled with willingness to speak truth to power?

Freeze us out of the big companies and you're just asking for startups out of nowhere to nip at their heels.

Happens all the time. I have two roles open now which are female only. Its not stated on the advert but they are. The first girl to walk through the door will pretty much get it, experience or not.

Not much I can do about it other than just not interview anyone. Not that I can. All I get through is CVs from men with decent qualifications and portfolios. I mean what use are they to me as someone needing a C++ developer and a network engineer?

What, you think there is a way for men to win this game? Sadly, I don't think there is. When even men are fighting in the feminist corners, it's sort of like an inside attack!

To be straight, if a woman presented herself with great qualifications, experience, could run rings around our internal testing and demonstrated that she would fit in with the team dynamic, I'd have zero problems hiring her. The sad part is tonnes of men fit every bit of that description; I've yet to come across a single female that does.

Also, of the last two women that were in my department, one was promoted to another position ahead of men years her senior, the other recently quit last week as it "wasn't for her" despite her having two months of one-on-one training from other techs. She even raised the "only girl" thing at her exit interview yet never once did she mention it at any other point in her reviews or anything! I think that was called grabbing every possible victim card...

Remember having this problem in 2002 when applying for J1 visa jobs. Lots of women only jobs that sounded pleasant.

As a side point, failed to get a handyman job in Conneticut (sp?) that would've been great life experience...

Whoa dude. Where do you draw the line there?

Some of this requires really advanced skills. As an example I recently replaced a leaky drain on a bathroom sink but that was all pvc pipe. I don't have the skill to work with and solder the copper pipes in my house. I also had to ask a guy at the hardware store how to do it because I didn't know, I didn't even know that they were all built to the same standard. Does that make me a faggot ass liberal beta man?

What about when you need help with a skill that you don't have? Would you be ok with someone else charging the shit out of you for being a faggot ass liberal beta man who doesn't have the specific skill that they have?

EDIT: Personally, I actually don't want to go into the trades.

As long as you are willing to do what you can within your skill set, and willing to broaden it over time, you don't qualify for his insult. It's the "men" who don't own any tools and are never willing to try to fix things themselves that his complaint is more properly directed to.

Ultimately, the world is complicated, and specializations exist because people sink thousands of hours into learning a craft or trade that most of us only need an hour or two a year. Better to find a quality tradesman to do that kind of work for you than to risk damage by doing it yourself.

Then you better learn those skills or you must pay all your money. When your plumbing or electricity doesn't work anymore you are at the mercy of another's skills and you will pay any damn price demanded or go without.

A proper capitalist doesn't draw a line: if you can't pay you get nothing. Someone else who has the money will pay for work and that skilled tradesman will walk out your door and not come back until you also have money. And you'll go without.

There's more than one guy out there in every trade so I don't have to pay whatever one guy charges. I can find someone who's good and charges a price at the lower end of the spectrum. When tradesmen know you're looking at other options they tend to be much more flexible on prices.

Besides, it's illegal for me to do my own electrical work in my area. I think it's a stupid law but some moron in the past must have burned down their house by doing the wiring wrong.

While I did fix my own leaky sink drain it was an easy job because it was all pvc pipe. I think I'm better off in the long run learning the things that will make me more money than learning the advanced skills in something like plumbing so that I can be an unpaid amateur tradesman.

The same goes for cars. I learned how to change my own batteries, oil, brake pads, etc. but I'm not going to bother with learning how to fix a fucked up engine. At some point I'm better off just paying someone else to do the really hard stuff.

The trades are woefully understaffed: a lot of skilled guys are retiring so not many are left behind. This means they all talk to each other and all have the ability together to charge you gigantic prices. They know it and confirm this to each other all the time.

You will pay.

It's not illegal for you to do your electrical work only illegal without a permit to do particular things like plug it all in to the fuse box. You get the person with the licence & get the permits to finish it. Or you get the licence yourself too.

Saving money is making money: if you spend a fortune to pay others to fix your things you may as well have been making money doing the same thing. To re-tile a small bathroom & re-fit the pipes could set you back a good 2 to 4 thousand dollars. How many work hours of your life will that cost you?

Modern engines: you don't fix them. Flaws are internal to a solid cast unit & you can't fix it. No one can. The aluminum is too cheap prior to being cast, the machine is too complex after being cast so if it fractures inside it's fucked. It's done. The cast-iron days of cutting & welding back engine parts to fix one are over. That's mass production for you. Can't beat the manufacturing cost of a sand-cast and poured aluminum.

There's still a lot you can do which is why the cabbies who make the most money do most of their own work to keep the cash they already earned.

It's becoming a requirement to charge as you suggest, just to stay in business. When I was working commission-only, I needed a 'whale' each month to boost my check 30-40%. Typically, I overcharged a female or beta male.

This is not new. The car industry sees higher profit per sale on women customers.

A friend of mine was an Asst. Manager for a telecom store; had cellphones and stuff.

They hired attractive women because customers are more inclined to interact with women and buy things thus making a sale more likely as well the commission she will make.

That's why you'll often see at a kiosk, or mall. (Usually they are pretty vacant or the business is slow on non-iPhone release days). There is a male manager, and 2-3 female staff.
