What do you mean acquainted? It all depends on how deep your interactions with them run and how long you've been around them.

If it's a girl you see on your karate class for once a week that you just say hi to, then it's easy to salvage.

It's harder to dig yourself out of the hole once you've hung out with them as their girlfriend.
