First of all you shouldn't make it too obvious. The most important thing in the first few meetings is to get to know the members a bit and not to make an ass out of yourself (Losing your frame, becoming the punching bag of the group).

Key thing is to observe the group dynamic. Who is talking the most? Who is the one who decides most of the group's actions, and who are the ones who are the most timid. To skyrocket any hierarchy you need to become someone who the quiet people can rely on, since they most likely form the majority of the group and subtly decide the leader of the group.

No matter what role you want to take on in a social group, you don't want to be at the bottom, and you don't want to be at the top if you can't handle it.
