My parents are lovely people who have supported me in every way for my entire life. However, they are slowly starting to lose their minds because I'm 26 and single. Someone wanted to set me up with a guy who is a solid 2/10. I declined because I have zero physical attraction, to the point where even if he is HV, I still wouldn't be able to see the guy as more than a friend.
My parents think it's unacceptable for me to decline to meet someone based on physical appearance if they check all the other boxes. In this case it means having a good, high-paying job and being of the same religious and cultural background as us. They said a lot of hurtful things and really hit below the belt in berating me/trying to convince me to go on a date with the guy.
Some highlights: "You are going to end up alone just like [insert names of acquaintances' daughters who are still single in their 30s and 40s]"
"Maybe he won't even like you, you're not that gorgeous"
"You're going to regret this when you hit 30 and no one wants you, you'll wish you had this guy then"
"It didn't work out with [ex's name, other ex's name, or other ex's name], obviously you have no luck in dating, so you're in no position to decline. Just take what you can get."
Also making me feel like a bad person for saying that he is unattractive. I would never comment on someone's physical appearance unless I'm forced to. I actually feel bad for even having this conversation.
Thankfully because of FDS I'm not as stressed out about being single as I was prior to FDS. I even enjoy being single most of the time, though I obviously want to meet my HVM one day.
I've levelled up in almost every way, I'm in great shape, my hair/nails/clothes are always on point, I have a great group of friends and a promising career ahead of me. I know that I'm a great catch objectively speaking. Obviously not everyone is going to love me, but that's just life. Sue me, I like a nice face, a full head of hair, and a fit body. I have all those things, so why shouldn't my partner?
Sorry for this rant, this situation has just got me feeling out of sorts. It doesn't help that I've suffered a lot of disappointment in dating the past couple of years and can't seem to catch a break in that department. Part of me is wondering if they're right and I'm living in a lala land holding out for a partner I'm actually attracted to. I know my parents only want the best for me, so I'm having some trouble reconciling their words with my feelings. Idk what to do.
