I am in my early 20s. My current sales job pays 30k + commission annually and really stretches me thin financially. Currently in 5k of debt and still can't afford to move out of my mom's basement after 2 years. I believe I can make closer to 50k if I apply myself to my current job even more. I am still learning. I am not under any pressure from my current employer. My current employer has a good reputation and i stable, about 70 years old. Handled the pandemic well, did not lay off any workers but everyone received a 2% pay cut. I am simply looking for a larger base salary. I applied to a job doing the same role in a bigger city, which pays 40k starting salary. The company I applied to has a very good reputation and also is a stable one, being almost 100 years old. I did the first portion of the interview process and the money sounded relatively great but a few things didn't really sit well with my gut.

  1. After the probation period, the base salary goes up to 50k. it sounded good to me at first, but the 20% pay rise after the probationary period seems like they do an assessment and decide whether they want to keep you on or not at that point. Like its Either you get a raise or get the axe.
  2. There are only 50 employees in the company.
  3. The manager says each employee runs like their own small business, and I have to generate considerably more revenue than my costs (eg lead generation ) in order to make good commissions.
  4. The manager says that if one doesn't meet the costs then my job could be put into question.
  5. I have to technically pay for every lead I get, which I don't have to do at my current company. The more leads I get, the more sales i need to make to be in the green zone. It puts somewhat of a sell or get fired pressure on me.

I have a young family and Im not sure casting uncertainty over my income is the smartest thing to do. The new company was happy with the first interview and has invited me to do a second one in person. I would appreciate any thoughts or even criticism. Thanks guys
