Anyone had a dog or other animal that had to be put down to sleep.....How did you cope?

I think a solid principle for a man going his own way is to learn to let go of your attachments to people and objects.

Everything is impermanent and like the 1 other commenter alluded to: celebrate the good life they had, and allow yourself to have a good cry in private when the waves of grief hit you (and they will. For the next 5 years probably)

I had a cat. My one regret was taking it to a clinic instead of having it done at home

The coping wasn't that bad because she was pretty old so she had a good life, not much you can do...

I ain't gonna lie. It's hard. I had a kitten for 6 months that developed FIP and had to be put down before he was even a year old. It was very heartbreaking even for a guy that considers himself a little hardened. I had it done in my home. I held him and comforted him in his favorite chair and let him know I loved him. And yeah, I cried.

I agree with what one user said about attachments, but sometimes that goes out the window when something you really care about and innocent has to be put down. Pain fades. And to be trite, death is part of life and all that jazz. But that doesn't make it suck any less.

My best advice is to accept it will happen. You have one thing I didn't - more time. I two days from diagnosis to him being so miserable there was nothing to do. Enjoy the time and love your pet. Pets are better than people, because their love is unconditional unless you're an abusive prick.

Death is natural and you embrace that. Instead of focusing on loss, remember the good times fondly the way Vikings would toast to a fallen brothers exploits. Share stories of how awesome he was.

So, you do what you can for your pet, and then remember them fondly.

Routine is also good as a loss of a pet creates a disruption in your routine. This easily leads people to being depressed. You want to restructure yourself so that you actually have things to do and enjoy your life. Don’t sit there with that vacant time and just focus on the negativity. That’s just depressing, literally.

worst day of my life.. i NEVER want to have to make that decision again... but.. in the end, its what's best for them .. not for you. and be there. they tried to get me to leave the room, told them fuck no.. i'm not going anywhere... after she fell asleep for the last time, they said i could go and they would take her in the back.. told her again.. fuck no, we don't leave family behind laying on a floor .... they let me carry her back to the table and take her collar home.. RIP my sweet girl.

if it comes to putting down your pet you should really, if possible, plan ahead and get the vet to comet to your homez. make it your dog and yourself as comfortable as possible.

others than that, the best way to cope is to get another pet pretty soon after. it's not about replacing your dog which will never happen because it was a unique creature that you loved dearly, but it helps you cope with feelings of sadness, loneliness and fear.

I lost my cat (14 ys he lived with me) and my other cat was of course very shaken by this loss. only few days later we started searching for another cat at the local shelter which fit our needs. and we found one. and on Sunday I will probably adopt a third one from another shelter. this time a girl, four months..

TL;DR - your opinion will change depending on the condition of the dog once it's time do make a decision.

at some point, you may get to the point that doing everything you can to keep the dog alive would be a selfish thing to do. keeping him alive just to make YOU happy is a form of torture for the dog. they get old, they get tired, they get ready to go. they're in pain. letting go of your pet isn't cruel -- it's the final act of love that you can show them.

i had a boston terrier that i got the year after i bought my house (i was 32 years old). i never had a real pet before, as my dad hated dogs (and the idea of pets in general). during my apartment years, i didnt want to have a dog in a small space so i waited until i had my own fenced in yard to "take the plunge".

i got this dog as an 8 week old puppy. he was sweet, had a great personality, never barked, never scared a stranger or fought another dog. at 3yrs 8 mos old, i noticed that he was eating his food much more slowly.. a few weeks later he was barely eating at all and starting to lose weight. within a few days i noticed a large bulge on his left ribcage, like he had swallowed a tennis ball. i tried giving him fresh chicken. no. steak. no. something was WRONG if a dog doesn't want fresh steak. took him to the vet for diagnosis.. huge malgnant cancerous tumor. by now i can see his spine and individual ribs. vet tells me this is exceedingly rare for a dog so young, and says that i can pour a bunch of money into him to try to fix it or just accept that he had a cruel fate.

i loved this dog and he loved me right back. not wanting to extend his pain or suffering, i thanked him for giving me a very positive experience as a first time pet owner, and decided the best way i could honor him was to end his suffering and let him go. that being said, when it came time to put him down i could not be in the room because i felt like a murderer. my sister stayed with him and she told me that he went down peacefully as if he had just fallen asleep. i do regret not having the BALLS to be there when it went down, but I feel like i made the right decision overall.

you're pre-worrying about something that isn't even on the horizon yet. once you get to that point and you see how your dog isn't doing well, your outlook / opinion on it might change like mine did. i replaced that dog later with another boston terrier, but their personalities couldnt be more different. i love the new dog just as much as i did the old one, but i really wish i could have gotten a "full life" out of my first dog.

I loved my cat to death had him for 15 years passed away in April. Miss him with all my heart cried like a baby for days.

How to cope? Spend as much time as possible with him now. Give him his favorite snack. Talk to him tell him how much you care. Memories you had whatever. Pet him as you talk.

Afterwords dont put his stuff away until you're ready. There are actually support groups online. Like chats. I got on one for a day. Also bought a memorial and have his pic framed on the book shelf.

I miss him and it comforts me to know i gave him a great life.

Yeah, my trusty little dog that traveled all over with me. He was fit and was bounding around the kitchen, then just dropped. He wound up having a stroke which partially paralyzed him. All I can say is it's rough, but stay in the room until the end. I didn't want him going out scared and alone.

I think you should be with her if you can do it. I wasn't with my little girl when she was put down and I've regretted it all my life. I actually welled up this morning thinking of her, how synchronous this post is.

She was the light of my life that no human could ever replace. My little Angel, my darling, I'll remember you forever and always.

I had a pitbull...for 13 years... One day I found her on the side of the house.. must have had a stroke and passed away.

It was sad. Friendly non-typical pitbull. Recently had surgery too.

As fucked up as it may sound, there will always be another dog who would love to show you the same amount of love or more. Be happy that you and your dog had great memories, but now it's time to focus on making new memories. Sorry for your loss.
