There was a saying I use in my sales job to remind my staff of why we do what we do: "No one will pay you for something if you don't have the balls to charge them for it."

This is related to what you're saying here. Basically no one will respect you if you can't respect yourself. Letting someone walk all over you and letting them dictate your decisions is not someone else's fault, it's yours for not respecting yourself. Create your value. Know your value. And then demand your value. Spot on mate.
