I think you're missing the part where they both clearly agreed to exchange presents early. He said he would get her something and then didnt. He set the expectation not her.

She pays for everything in this guy’s life from groceries to bills. He said they were exchanging gifts in the first place. She shows up with a gift and he shows up empty handed because he spent his money on weed.
