Great call. At the moment, IT, engineering, medical, government, and essential jobs are what is going to be still running strong. I play 5 instruments, and guitar exceptionally well, but I chose engineering. Being able to play an instrument exceptionally well and being reliable in the music industry is what really counts cause everyone will want to use your skill. Just like anything else. You could make an extra $300-$500 a month though playing weekend gigs.

Making money in music can be your side hustle that can potentially become your main job if you become successful at it. You can become successful in music without going to school, and that success doesn't have to be becoming famous.

at 17 i was heavily recruited by the Navy. i was too naive to realize that the recruiters pump you full of self-confidence and shower you with compliments in order to get you buttered-up enough to sign on the dotted line and throw your life away for four years (and possibly forever). so i took the bait hook line and sinker.. went through the whole process and was "stopped" at the Phoenix MEP station because i supposedly had a hernia that was discovered during the "physical" portion.. the presence of the hernia caused the doctor to deny my enlistment at that time, telling me to re-apply in six months. well, six months later i was in the middle of my first semester at university and the rest is history..

sometimes i wonder how wildly different my life would have turned out if i had been cleared to proceed during the physical that spring day in Phoenix, 1997.

Unless you’re composing symphonies at 15 music school is a waste of time. Take it from a failed musician/actor/writer who decided to become a business man.

You should really do what you want to do in life OP, no regrets. If you want to do music then by all means give a shot, you never know what you can make out of it. Surely you must be good enough if they came looking for you instead of you looking for them now.

And before some STEM elitist tries to argue with me in the replies, I'm a PhD student in Physics. I was an art student in my freshman year of my undergrad, went to Econ, then got a degree in astrophysics. That's just what my interests lie, but I do sometimes think about the life I could live had I pursued painting.

I've learned several musical instruments at home for free. I can't compose symphonies in my mind for an entire orchestra, but there's always youtube.
