At 38 (now 50), went through a heartbreaking breakup. Realized I'd never have another serious relationship again and it really hurt...temporarily. Never married, no kids, invested well, enjoying friends/family, recently received a promotion, been slamming on the bass and drums and volunteer dog walking. Decided to take the path less traveled and it's worked out great.

Same for me. I split with my ex because, frankly, too much feminist bullshit got to her. Suddenly, my reasonable requests in our marriage were "abuse". There was a time I would have done anything for her. At least she was fair in the divorce, though I am starting to suspect I just caught her on a good day when we signed.
Two years later, I have given up on the dating market because they are all worse than her so far. I am only 30, looking at women 25-30 and all of them are a train wreck.
So now, I build my business, I work out, I mess around with electronics, I drink fine whiskies, and I travel.
Some days, I miss her, but I know that those days are over, whoever she was is gone. I tried to save it until my self respect would not allow anymore sacrifices. It would take a real unicorn to make me ever try again.

It took me until my mid 30s to stop chasing mediocre pussy at bars and clubs etc.

Yeah it’s rare, sorry yours wasn’t great growing up.
Mine was really great compared to most people and I’m just now realizing how lucky I was and that it’s not the norm. Glad I figured it out before getting married though.

Guess I was lucky, a little social anxiety mixed with the ability to read people allowed me to take my time. I saw the writing on the wall, and a lot of the women looking for "fairy tale romances" were also the ones bragging about their walks of shame or spending the night in random guy's apartments/dorm rooms. Whenever they got turned down, they moved on within the hour.
Guess it's the same now as I approach 30.
