You're parents aren't necessarily looking out for your best interests. They would willingly trade your happiness to keep you around and anchored with a couple of grandchildren they can spoil at their leisure. Rationalizing it by truly believing that that is a better existence for you than going your own way.

I bet a lot of what this man experienced was parental pressure. He mentioned that his father acknowledged that son wouldn't come back after the trip, but not if the father was okay with it or not.
