I think you misread entirely.

He was expecting to watch the game at a bar or someone's house (he actually asks, "Where are we watching the game?"). She validates herself to him repeatedly by showing that she actually knows her shit about the football team, as much as you can in a thirty second ad. She paid for the tickets to the football game, clearly, since he didn't even know they were going. His "looking around confused," is all part of him trying to figure out where they are going, as he slowly realizes they're going to the actual stadium.

I mean, it's pretty much pure fantasy that a woman would go through this much trouble for a scrawny beta football fan, but I don't think the intended message was that she was in charge of the relationship, just that she's an awesome girlfriend (oh, and the car handles potholes like a champ).
