I’ve spent six years in China from 2007-2013 to study, happiest years of my life but for reasons opposite to yours.

I’ve learned Chinese for a year and a half (I still suffer with it) to read the originals in Chinese will require more than few summer courses.

Regarding the philosophy, Taoism and these schools of life, they are not present on daily basis. China is a big mall of Starbucks, McDonald’s and smart phones. People are shallow, whole social structure is consumer-based, it’s highly competitive and unless you’re already peaceful from within you won’t find it in China.

There are places where you can perhaps explore this desire, maybe far away villages or temples, but they are not easily accessible for foreigners and you need to speak proper Chinese (you won’t find anyone speaking English even in the airport sometimes).

If your reasons are spiritual and self-exploratory, look into Thailand, Nepal and places that provide structure for you to start and are quite accessible, foreign friendly and Visa free. :)

Edit: if your main focus is language, you’ll find pretty good schools everywhere in China. Try to stay in a main city to mingle and use your language, meet other expats and the like. A lot of foreigners come to China to study Chinese over few weeks (party 70% of the time) and they’re not serious about it, so avoid those and find a serious institute that’s not vacation-focused, perhaps a university extension. Regarding the women, they like foreigners and are easy to lay, you’ll enjoy few affairs but always remember mgtow.

Have fun and enjoy China, I wish time will go back to that place, it is very dear to me.
