I plan on doing that next year. My advice for new guys: try living in your car not to far from your place. Like moving to quiet towns 1 and a half to 2 hours away from your area. That way it won't feel like such a huge leap.

I've done this and loved it. I cycled, hiked, camped, fished, and did a lot of outdoors stuff. If I needed internet, I just went to a chainstore with free wifi. My cell has data so I just use that all the time too. Change of clothes. I usually went out for 2-3 weeks at a time and had clothes packed for that time. If I needed to wash them, I'd go to a laundromat. Food? I only bought food for the day and cooked it myself at camping spots. Or I'd take restaurant food.

If yer gonna try it, like I said, I'd recommend trying out in a town 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive from your place. In some location you're not used to. That way it won't feel rough because you're close to your place but far enough to feel like you're in a significantly different location.

Nevertheless, be prepared for any problems. Know the best spots to park to be free from cops, towing, or criminals. Make sure you have enough money for emergencies. Make sure you're prepared for keeping cool when it's hot and hot when it's cool in the car. If you can, take a lower priced car. And learn about cars in your spare time. How to do simple stuff like change the oil or a flat. And I don't know what kinda animals you have in your area. But make sure you are aware of them ahead of time. Lastly, try your hardest to get some exercise and get/stay in shape. Even if nothing else, getting good exercise out in the open country will make it all worth it.

Glad I could help. Also, keep your van clean. Alotta dudes keep their vans dirty with garbage and old food. The scent of the old food attracts mice, who can get in the smallest cracks, like 1/2 an inch. Keeping your van clean reduces the chances of mice or vermin to a miniscule possibility.

Showering? Planet Fitness for $10 a month offers showers. If you can't find one of those. You can get a portable shower. I go to Starbucks restroom, lay a tarp down, and do a 5-10 minute wash in there. I make sure not to splash around and have paper towels to clean up any excess water. I don't wanna trash their property.

It's true that the positives are huge and the freedom is well worth it. Remember the people of the 1800s were roughing it. People of all backgrounds set out into the open wild to get away from the stifling atmosphere of city living. They had far less amenities/luxuries than we did but no doubt they had more courage than the average American today. If man could establish a good life for himself way back then, we can do it too with all the things we got.

Nevertheless, always remember, safety and preparation first. Read up van living and look at the pros and cons on websites and youtube channels. Lastly, don't stress yourself out about it. If you're starting out with the van life 1-2 hours from your place, it's basically just camping in a van. You'll be surprised at how much satisfaction you can get cooking your own meals, working up a sweat cycling in open country, or visiting abandoned buildings and exploring. It's cheaper and more satisfying than spending half an hour in a traffic jam just to pay 10 bucks for parking in some overpriced nightclub just to talk to snooty idiots.
