Here's a little tidbit for ya.
So, I will use the analogy of the Spider's Web here. Something that likely has already been thought of by another person. In general, you are the spider. And it is up to you to construct your web, as it will allow you to survive and become stronger. What do I mean by that? I will list the necessities.
1) Strength: Spidersilk is quite strong. Be strong, and resilient, and you will be at the top for a while, with some assistance. 2) Connections: You never see a successful spider that has a web with no (or few) connections. 3) Flexibility: A spider's silk isn't stiff. It blows in the wind, responds to change, and is light and breathable. 4) Having a good plan: Spiders are rather intuitive, and use the tendency of flies and other insects flying intothe web to capture them. Good planning is helpful.
5) However, all of this is incomplete without a good, disciplined spider. The spider, and its discipline is most important to the success of the web. He repairs broken sections of web and builds new connections, as well as clearing past victims from the webbing. He feeds, and becomes stronger as a result.
TL;DR You can be as strong, flexible, connected and well organized as you want, but what brings all of that power into one person, you, is Discipline. Hard to earn and easy to lose, it will bring you to the top quickly.
{Criticism, as always, is welcome. Be harsh, if you wish. After all, I've only been here 5 months. Thought this up, as I was thinking about the discipline I had growing up, and how recently, I've recognized the fact I had let it slip out of my grasp. Now, I'm determined to restore it. And so, I bring a little reminder, albeit a metaphoric one, that discipline is the unifying force that brings your strengths and plans to fruition.}
