well you see when two people marry for example in America they both know that if they get divorced everything will split half and half.
but In Iran it's not like that , when two people want to get married the bride should offer something as her Mehriye which is her right and if the groom accept her condition, he become a debtor to her and must give her Mehriye any time she asks for it ( they don't even have to be divorced) .

so it's up to the girl, she can asks for a bunch of flowers for her mehriye or a trip or a house or anything else. once i actually heard that a girl asked for 500 kisses!!!!!!
but the most current thing is 300 to 1500 gold coins. and since the price of gold always changes , the value of the coins change too.

usually the women here don't even want their mehriye even when they are getting divorced, as long as the wife or ex-wife dose not want it, the husband is a free man but if she asks for it and he can't pay her, she can sue him and the court will put him in jail and he will stay there as long as he could give her the money.
their only way out, is that she drops charges or officially signs something that says she does not claim anything anymore.
also sometimes the court can divide the amount of mehriye in small payments, in this case the man can get out of prison but he have to give a gold coin to his ex-wife every month for example.

every year a lot of guys go to prison for this because they get all romantic at first and agree to amounts that they can't give back in a million years.

and average sallery is 200$ month

and average mehriye is 500 gold coin

so men cant pay that

and there are so many literal gold diggers

who marry some guy and in a week they go to court and get an order to collect gold coins from the poor guy

also no one will marry u if u dont agree with the debt
