This is also why "cohabiting" is NOT really the answer... even when NO kids come out of the LTR.

Because, while in theory "retroactive" laws are NOT supposed to be valid -- i.e. "ex post facto" -- in reality, they're imposed ALL THE TIME...

And just like "No Fault Divorce" effectively altered the situation with prior marriages, so to may other "new" laws alter non-marital relationships.

I can easily envision feminists & other SJW's demanding some kind of retroactive "reparations" law whereby -- to remediate "social justice" and the "historical oppression" of women by men -- even NON-marital relationships that had ended many years prior can (upon suit by one or the other of the relationship parties) get "re-examined" by a court based on their later financial status (i.e. PRESENT financial condition at the time of the court case), and claiming that a significant portion of Mr. Smith's subsequent wealth was a "fruit of the (prior) cohabiting relationship" with Ms. Jones, and that he needs to fork over XX% of his savings/retirement funds/other assets (or at least those that were ostensibly initially "acquired" during the relationship X or even XX years prior).

And yes that would be insane and yes it would be a fucking mess... but that's PRECISELY the kind of thing that courts LOVE to create; and bureaucracies LOVE to control people via.

What you just touched on right there is a rather painful reality. When it comes down to it there is no way you can get informed consent. There is no grand fathering when it comes to family law, so you have no clue what you are jumping into. It is even worse because in Australia and courts tend to be the ones to write the law. Not to mention we have defacto by distance.
