When I was in my early teens I had a weekend job at a Roman Catholic rectory. They hired local kids to be receptionists on the weekends when the old biddies that worked the 9-5 Mon-Fri shift were off. I'd answer the phone, answer the door, sell mass cards to people who came to buy them, etc, etc. There were 5 priests there. None of them ever touched me and now with all that's happened I joke that I don't know if I'm more relieved or more hurt. That's not what this story's about though. People would often randomly come looking to talk to a priest. Almost like a therapist. If there were any around I would get one and they would go off to a side room to talk. A lot of men came. One day, one of the priests had just let a man out and as he turned away from the door shaking his head he looked at me and said "It makes me sick!" Jerking his thumb back towards the door he continued "I see this all the time. A man can work hard for 20 years, being a good father, a husband, and a provider. Let him lose his job, or be down on his luck and you'd be surprised how quickly the family turns on him". The priest went back to his room, but to naive 12 year old me this didn't compute. I mean if you loved someone unconditionally and they loved you surely they'd stand by you when times were tough right? I mean one way or another a family or a couple would find a way to make things work. If you loved and cared for somebody and treated them well, why wouldn't they help you if you needed it? That's the way it was on TV. Morally, that's the way things should be. Now while this particular problem wasn't why my marriage is ending. Now that it is I have to admit that deep down inside for some time now I knew that If I lost my job, or got really sick, or got in some trouble and ended up in jail that my ass would be kicked curb so fast my head would spin. I'm sure the kids would still love me, but are too young to help, but my wife never. Emotionally it's safe to acknowledge that now. Thanks Father L. for the life lesson.
